The third session of bilateral political consultations between Italy and Bangladesh, provided for by a 2023 memorandum of understanding, was held at the Italian Foreign Ministry on 4 August. It was co-chaired by Ambassador Riccardo Guariglia, Secretary General of Italy’s Foreign Ministry, and Ambassador Asad Alam Siam, Secretary General of Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry.
Migration
The two sides reaffirmed the importance of combating irregular migration and human trafficking and agreed to strengthen cooperation on regular channels, within the framework of the work-permit decree and the migration and mobility memorandum signed in 2025.
Beyond migration
Talks also covered trade and investment, defence and security, culture and higher education, as well as regional issues: the Indo-Pacific, South Asia and Bangladesh’s relations with the European Union. The meeting prepared for the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027.
In the preceding months, President Sergio Mattarella had sent congratulations to Bangladesh’s new President, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
