In 2024 Bangladeshi workers signed 172,966 contracts in Italy, but 77.8% were fixed-term and only 12.5% permanent. With short contracts and frequent job changes, knowing how to read your documents is essential.
The contract
- It must be in writing and handed over before you start.
- It must state your job, grade, hours, duration and the national collective agreement (CCNL) applied: restaurants, retail, metalworking, domestic work…
- The employer must notify the job centre of your hiring (Unilav notice): ask for a copy, you also need it to renew your permit.
The payslip
- Hours worked and overtime: compare them with your own calendar.
- Basic pay and grade: they must match the CCNL tables.
- INPS contributions: they count towards pension, unemployment and sick pay.
- Thirteenth-month pay (and fourteenth in some sectors), accrued holidays and leave.
- TFR, the severance pay due when the job ends.
Warning signs
A payslip with fewer hours than you worked, part of your pay “off the books” or being asked to give money back are all irregular. You can check your contributions online on the INPS website with SPID or CIE, or get free help from a patronato or a trade union.
