A valid passport is needed for almost everything: renewing your residence permit, applying for citizenship, travelling. In Italy a Bangladeshi passport is renewed at the Embassy of Bangladesh in Rome or the Consulate General in Milan, without going back to Bangladesh.

Goodbye MRP, hello e-passport

Bangladesh is replacing the machine-readable passport (MRP) with the electronic passport (e-passport), which contains a chip. From 1 January 2027 missions abroad issue only e-passports. MRPs already issued stay valid until the expiry date printed in them.

The steps

  1. Apply online on the official portal epassport.gov.bd: choose the mission (Rome or Milan), the number of pages (48 or 64) and the validity (5 or 10 years). Print the form.
  2. Book an appointment with the embassy or consulate, following the instructions on their official websites.
  3. Biometrics: fingerprints, photo and signature. Before confirming, check your name, date and place of birth on the screen carefully: correcting them later is very hard.
  4. Collection: you get a text message when the passport is ready. With the code on your receipt you can track the application online. It usually takes up to two months.

Documents

  • Your current passport and a photocopy of the data pages.
  • Your original residence permit and a photocopy.
  • Your NID or a birth certificate that can be verified online (everify.bdris.gov.bd), with exactly the same details as your passport.
  • The printed application form, the payment receipt and any declarations the mission asks for.

How much it costs

The fee depends on the pages, validity and delivery type (regular or express). For people living abroad it is set in US dollars and ranges from about $110 to $250; in Italy you pay in euros. Before your appointment, check the current amount on the embassy or consulate website.

Names and dates that don’t match

Your passport details must match your NID and birth certificate, and they are the same details you use in Italy for your permit and codice fiscale. Corrections are limited and, for adults without an NID, very difficult from Italy. Under the announced rules, people living abroad can use their NID or birth certificate to correct differences only until 31 December 2026 – if you have this kind of problem, don’t wait.
