The codice fiscale (tax code) is the first number you need in Italy: for your job and rental contracts, to register with the ASL and choose a family doctor, for your children’s school, to open a bank account, buy a SIM card and apply for SPID. Many foreign citizens receive it automatically during their entry or residence-permit procedure.
Who assigns it
- Entry for work or family reunification: the Sportello unico per l’immigrazione at the Prefettura gives you a provisional code (numbers only). The definitive code, 16 characters of letters and numbers, comes with your residence-permit application.
- Other permits requested at the Questura: the Questura assigns it directly.
- Asylum seekers: the Questura or border police assign it when you file your application; it is printed on the receipt.
- Already in Italy without one: apply at an Agenzia delle Entrate office with form AA4/8.
What to bring to the Agenzia delle Entrate
- Form AA4/8, filled in (also available at the office).
- One document: a valid residence permit, or a valid passport with a visa where required, or an identity statement issued by your country’s embassy or consulate.
Book an appointment on the Agenzia delle Entrate website or app, or on the toll-free number 800 90 96 96 (06 97617689 from a mobile). The codice fiscale is free: nobody should ask you for money to get it.
The card
When you register with the national health service, your codice fiscale is printed on the tessera sanitaria (health card), which is posted to the address you gave. If you lose it or it gets damaged, you can request a duplicate on the Agenzia delle Entrate website or at an office.
If your details are wrong
Your name, surname and date of birth must be written exactly as in your passport and permit. A mistake causes problems with INPS, your bank, the Comune and your employer. If you spot a difference, ask the Agenzia delle Entrate to correct it, bringing your passport and permit. If over time you have received two different codes (for example a provisional and a definitive one), use only the definitive one from then on and tell your employer, doctor and bank.
