NASpI is the INPS unemployment benefit for people who lose their job involuntarily. Legally resident foreign citizens are entitled to it too and, for many workers on fixed-term contracts, it is vital support between jobs.

Who is entitled

  • People who lost their job involuntarily: dismissal or the end of a fixed-term contract.
  • Not available after voluntary resignation, except resignation for just cause (for example unpaid wages, harassment, bullying).
  • You need at least 13 weeks of contributions in the last four years.

How much and for how long

The benefit is 75% of your average pay over the last four years up to a threshold, plus 25% of any amount above it, with a maximum updated every year. After the first months it decreases gradually. It lasts for half the weeks of contributions in the last four years, up to 24 months.

How to apply

  • Online on the INPS website with SPID or CIE, through the contact centre or via a patronato (free).
  • Within 68 days of the end of your job. If you apply within 8 days, payment starts from the eighth day.
  • Declare your immediate availability for work and take part in job-centre activities.

What about your residence permit?

Losing your job does not mean losing your permit straight away: you can stay in Italy to look for a new job for the remaining validity of the permit and in any case for a period set by law, by registering with the job centre.
