Your residence permit must be renewed before it expires: the law asks you to apply at least 60 days in advance. A late application is possible within 60 days after expiry only for serious reasons, so it is better not to take the risk.

Where to apply

  • Postal kit (yellow envelope) at post offices with a “Sportello Amico” desk: the channel for most work and family permits.
  • Directly at the Questura (police immigration office), with online booking where available, for some permit types (for example asylum and protection).

How much it costs

  • Sending the kit: €30.
  • Payment slip: €70.46 for permits of 3 months to 1 year; €80.46 for 1–2 years; €130.46 for the EU long-term residence permit.
  • A €16 revenue stamp.
  • No payment slip for asylum, subsidiary protection and medical treatment.

Documents for work permits

Copies of the expiring permit and tax code, passport pages, rental contract or hospitality declaration, the employment notice (Unilav) or contract, your latest tax return or payslips. Domestic workers also need proof of INPS contributions.

After applying

You will be called to the Questura for fingerprints. Always keep the receipt: together with your old permit it lets you work and use services. With the receipt alone you can travel back to your home country only on direct flights from Italy — check carefully before leaving.
