Since 12 June 2026 the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum, adopted two years ago, has applied. It creates a single framework for all 27 member states on border checks, asylum procedures and reception conditions, with a solidarity mechanism to relocate asylum seekers between countries.
Bangladesh on the “safe countries” list
In February the European Parliament approved the first EU list of safe countries of origin: Bangladesh, Colombia, Egypt, India, Kosovo, Morocco and Tunisia, plus EU candidate countries. Asylum claims from citizens of these countries are examined under an accelerated procedure.
In August 2025 the EU Court of Justice had ruled that a country could only be considered safe if it was safe for its whole population and territory, and that national judges could review this. The new EU regulation partly removes that requirement.
What remains guaranteed
- The right to apply for protection, even for people from a “safe” country.
- An individual examination of your story: anyone at risk of persecution can still be granted protection.
- The right to appeal a rejection, though within shorter deadlines.
The returns question
Alongside the Pact, a much stricter returns regulation is under discussion and has been criticised by more than 250 organisations. The Commission’s first review of implementation is expected in the coming months. With faster procedures it is even more important to contact a lawyer or an association straight away.
